Art

There’s no shortage of artistic approaches to historic sculpture-making and yet you can still be blown away when we came across the fabric sculptures of Barcelona-based artist Sergio Roger. Comprising busts of Roman emperors, statues of mythological princesses and Ionic columns, the artist’s “Textile Ruins” series is a tribute to classical Greek and Roman art and architecture as well as a reflection on the concepts of permanence and grandeur that there associated with.

Barcelona-based artist Sergio Roger translates his love of classical sculpture and architecture into plush textile sculptures.

Design

French-born, Tokyo-based designer Emmanuelle Moureaux began her long-running 100 colours series of installations in 2013 to investigate ways of dividing space with different shades, a concept she dubs shikiri. The latest iteration, by her namesake firm Emmanuelle Moureaux Architecture + Design, is 100 Colors no.35 for Japanese masking tape manufacturer MT. At the company’s factory in Kurashiki, 6,000 slender strips of washi tape, 17 miles total, are thoughtfully spaced out in rows hung vertically and diagonally, forming a gradated rainbow moiré tunnel through which visitors can stroll and immerse themselves in a joyous setting of hue on hue on hue.

Photography

Alessia Morellini who lives and works in the Italian city of Modena is a self-taught photographer who uses the medium to enhance the complexity of her surroundings. Her passion for travel influences what she captures on camera, with visual elements like water, sunshine, and nature as prominent and recurring motifs.

Fascinated by small and familiar aspects of objects, people, and natural landscapes, Morellini demonstrates a penchant for the decontextualization of details, allowing them to stand out as the focal point of her images. When viewing her work, it’s as if we are in a strange, unreal place, perhaps a dream state or a warm holiday destination. Beyond her visual aesthetic, it’s challenging to place what exactly makes Morellini’s work so distinctive. Yet, her ability to photograph with such intention and purpose makes her contemporary images stand out. In addition, the photographer’s considered use of colour, texture, and composition instils a serene feeling in the viewer, providing a moment to pause and see the world through Morellini’s perspective.

Textiles

Rayon is a soft, silky fabric that is perhaps the most confusing of all textiles. It’s sometimes called viscose, modal, lyocell, Tencel, acetate or bamboo. It tends to feel denser and more fluid than cotton or linen, but even this depends on how it’s been extracted and spun.

Turning trees into textiles is linked to historical atrocities and environmental harm. But any plant-based material can potentially become viscose-rayon
